How much does Etsy take per sale?

For a US seller, the short answer is $0.45 plus 9.5% of the order total before Offsite Ads. But the percentage swings from 18.5% on a $5 order to 9.6% on a $500 order, because $0.45 of the stack is fixed no matter what you sell. Here is the whole ladder with every line of math shown.

The short answer: what makes up the cut

Three charges apply to essentially every sale. A US seller with free shipping and no Offsite Ads pays:

ChargeRateApplies to
Listing fee$0.20 per itemFlat, charged per unit sold (and on every 4-month renewal)
Transaction fee6.5%Item price + shipping + gift wrap
Payment processing3% + $0.25Everything the buyer pays

Add it up and every order costs $0.45 + 9.5% of the order total — 9.5% because the 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% variable part of processing share the same base. The fixed $0.45 ($0.20 + $0.25) is why small orders hurt: it does not shrink when the price does.

About the Offsite Ads column. That fee only applies when the buyer clicked an Etsy ad and bought within 30 days. It is 15% of the order total for shops under $10,000 in trailing sales (you can opt out) and 12% above that line (no opt-out). If none of your sales come from ads, ignore the last two columns entirely.

Why the percentage falls as the price rises

Look at the two ends of the ladder. On a $5 order, Etsy takes $0.93 — nearly one dollar in five. On a $500 order it takes $47.95, which is under ten cents on the dollar. The rates never changed; the mix did.

The $0.45 of fixed fees ($0.20 listing + $0.25 processing flat fee) is 9% of a $5 order by itself. On $500 it is 0.09%. Percentage fees behave the opposite way: they take the same 9.5% share at every price. So cheap orders are punished by the fixed part, and no order ever escapes the variable part. This is also why a simple "add 20% markup" pricing rule fails on low-priced items — it ignores the fixed fees completely. The pricing calculator solves for a target margin with them included.

What these numbers do not include

The ladder is the honest core, not the whole picture. Four things can move your real number:

1. Listing renewals. Each listing costs $0.20 to publish and renews for $0.20 every four months — even with zero sales. A catalogue of 100 listings costs $20 every four months before a single order.

2. Regulatory operating fees. Nine seller countries pay one on top of everything else — Hungary 1.97%, Türkiye 1.67%, Vietnam 1.24%, Canada 1.15%, France 1.14%, Spain 0.88%, Italy 0.80%, United Kingdom 0.48%, India 0.05% (effective 22 June 2026). US and Australian sellers pay none. Your country's full stack is on its rate page.

3. Currency conversion. If your listing currency differs from your deposit currency, Etsy takes another 2.5% of the order.

4. Payment processing differs by bank country. The ladder uses the US rate (3% + $0.25). The UK is 4% + £0.20, the eurozone 4% + €0.30, Japan 6.5% + ¥40.00. A UK seller on the same $35 order pays £1.54 in processing instead of $1.30 — the fee calculator covers all 17 countries.

Every logged change to any of these rates, with announced and effective dates, is in the fee change log.

Common questions

What percentage does Etsy take per sale?

For a US seller, about 9.5% of the order total plus $0.45 in fixed fees: 6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 payment processing, $0.20 listing per item. In practice that is about 18.5% on a $5 order and about 9.9% on a $100 order — the share falls as price rises because the fixed part does not scale.

Does Etsy take a percentage of shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the item price plus shipping plus gift wrap, and payment processing applies to everything the buyer pays. A $30 item with $5 shipping is charged on $35: $2.28 in transaction fees, not $1.95.

How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?

$9.95 for a US seller with no Offsite Ads (9.9%): $0.20 listing + $6.50 transaction + $3.25 processing. With Offsite Ads attribution add $15.00 for a total of $24.95; above $10k trailing sales the ad fee is 12% ($12.00) with no opt-out.

Why does Etsy take a bigger share on cheap items?

Fixed fees do not scale with price. Every sale carries at least $0.45 of fixed charges — $0.20 listing and the $0.25 flat part of processing. On a $5 order that is 9% of the order before any percentage fee, landing the total at 18.5%. On $500 it is 0.09% and the share falls to 9.6%.
