Etsy fees explained

Every charge Etsy applies to a sale, with real numbers rather than percentages alone. Rates checked 18 September 2026. Where a fee changed, the change is dated.

The short answer

Etsy charges three fees on every sale, and up to three more in specific circumstances. For a US seller with no advertising, the total lands between 9.5% and 11% of what the buyer pays — lower on expensive items, higher on cheap ones.

1. The listing fee — $0.20

Charged when you publish a listing, when it auto-renews after four months unsold, and each time a unit sells.

That last part catches people out. Publish one listing with a quantity of five and sell all five, and you pay 5 × $0.20 = $1.00 in listing fees — not $0.20. The listing renews for the next available unit every time one sells. At least one calculator in the search results claims the fee only triggers when the whole quantity sells out; that is wrong, and it understates listing costs for multi-quantity listings by a factor of the quantity.

Single-quantity listings are simpler: $0.20 once, plus another $0.20 if it renews after four months without selling.

2. The transaction fee — 6.5%

Etsy's main commission. It applies to the item price plus the shipping you charge the buyer, plus gift wrap and personalisation charges. It does not apply to the sales tax Etsy collects on your behalf.

The rate was raised from 5% to 6.5% on 11 April 2022, and it has not moved since. Etsy's own SEC filings state both the rate and the date, which is the strongest source available for this figure.

The shipping detail matters more than it looks. Charge $6 shipping and Etsy takes $0.39 of it. If your label costs $4.50, your real shipping margin is $1.11, not $1.50. Most sellers never notice because the fee appears as one combined line. Offering "free shipping" by building the cost into your item price makes no difference — the 6.5% applies to the total either way.

3. Payment processing — varies by country

Etsy Payments is mandatory in most markets. The rate depends on where your bank account is, not where the buyer is. Etsy's SEC filings put the range at 3.0% to 4.5% of the total sale price plus a flat per-order fee.

New Zealand, Türkiye, Vietnam and India are labelled lower confidence on the rate page — Etsy publishes these per country and we could not confirm all of them against a first-party page.

4. The regulatory operating fee — this is the one that changed

A country-specific percentage Etsy charges to cover local compliance costs, calculated on the same base as the transaction fee. Etsy announced the current rates on 22 April 2026 and they took effect on 22 June 2026.

France more than doubled. If you priced French orders using 0.47%, you have been under-charging since June. On a €100 order the fee went from €0.47 to €1.14 — small per order, but it is a 143% increase, and it applies to every French order you take. Most fee calculators ranking today are still showing the old figure.

One unresolved discrepancy: most sources give Canada 1.15%, one gives 0.50%. We use 1.15% and flag it. Confirm it in your own payment account if you sell from Canada.

5. Offsite Ads — 15% or 12%, charged on top

Etsy advertises your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Bing. When a buyer clicks one of those ads and purchases within 30 days, you pay a fee on that order.

Trailing 12-month salesFeeCan you opt out?
Under $10,00015%Yes — Shop Manager → Settings → Offsite Ads
$10,000 or more12%No. Enrolment is permanent, even if revenue later falls

Two details that decide whether this fee hurts you:

Because attribution runs for 30 days, it captures sales that would have happened anyway. A buyer who found you through organic search, then clicked a retargeted ad two weeks later, is an ad-attributed sale — you owe the fee even though they already knew about you. Work out your exposure with the Offsite Ads calculator.

6. Currency conversion — 2.5%

Charged when your listing currency differs from your deposit currency. Etsy also applies its own exchange rate, which sits slightly worse than the mid-market rate. Listing in the same currency as your payment account avoids the 2.5% entirely — the simplest fee to eliminate on this list.

What this adds up to

The same rates produce very different effective outcomes depending on price. US seller, no Offsite Ads, free shipping:

Item priceListingTransactionProcessingTotal feesEffective rate
$4.99$0.20$0.32$0.40$0.9218.5%
$9.99$0.20$0.65$0.55$1.4014.0%
$19.99$0.20$1.30$0.85$2.3511.8%
$29.99$0.20$1.95$1.15$3.3011.0%
$49.99$0.20$3.25$1.75$5.2010.4%
$99.99$0.20$6.50$3.25$9.959.9%
The difference between 18.5% and 9.9% is entirely the $0.45 of fixed fees. They are the same whether you sell a $5 item or a $500 item, so they take a far bigger share of cheap products. If you sell digital downloads under $5, fees are eating nearly a fifth of every sale before you have made anything.

Common questions

How much does Etsy take from a sale in 2026?

For a US seller using Etsy Payments with no Offsite Ads, roughly 9.5% to 11% of the total the buyer pays, depending on price. That is a $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% of the item price plus shipping, and payment processing at 3% + $0.25. Add 12% or 15% if the sale is ad-attributed.

Why do Etsy fees take a bigger share of cheap items?

Because $0.45 of every sale is fixed — the $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 payment fee — and does not scale with price. On a $4.99 item that is 9% of the item price before any percentage fee applies; on a $99.99 item it is 0.45%. Same rates, an 18.5% effective rate at $4.99 and 9.9% at $99.99.

Which countries pay the regulatory operating fee?

After the 22 June 2026 change: Hungary 1.97%, Türkiye 1.67%, Vietnam 1.24%, Canada 1.15%, France 1.14%, Spain 0.88%, Italy 0.80%, United Kingdom 0.48%, India 0.05%. US and Australian sellers do not pay it.

Does Etsy charge its transaction fee on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% applies to the item price plus the shipping you charge the buyer, plus gift wrap. It does not apply to the sales tax Etsy collects on your behalf. Building shipping into your item price makes no difference to the fee.

Is the Offsite Ads fee charged on top of the transaction fee?

Yes, it stacks. An ad-attributed order pays the listing fee, the 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing as normal, then adds 15% or 12%. Guides claiming the ad fee replaces the transaction fee are wrong.

What is the $0.20 listing fee charged per listing or per sale?

Per unit sold. A listing with a quantity of five that sells all five costs 5 × $0.20 = $1.00 in listing fees. The listing auto-renews for the next available unit each time one sells.

Can I avoid any of these fees?

Two of them. List in your payment account's currency to avoid the 2.5% conversion fee. And if your shop made under $10,000 in the previous 365 days, you can opt out of Offsite Ads entirely. The listing fee, transaction fee and payment processing apply to every sale.
