Etsy vs Shopify fee calculator
Same order, both fee stacks. Drag monthly orders to find the exact crossover — the order count where Shopify's subscription starts paying off.
What this comparison does and does not include
The Etsy column runs the exact same engine as our Etsy fee calculator: the $0.20 listing fee, the 6.5% transaction fee, the payment processing fee for your country, and the regulatory operating fee where one applies. Offsite Ads are blended in at the share you set. The Shopify column uses the subscription plus Shopify Payments' online card rate on the full order total (price + shipping).
- Not on Shopify's bill here: apps and plugins, a custom domain (about $10–15/year), themes, and your own ad spend to replace the discovery Etsy's marketplace gives you for free.
- Not on Etsy's bill here: Etsy Ads (the pay-per-click product — model that in the Etsy Ads ROI calculator).
- PayPal, manual gateway and in-person rates differ from the Shopify Payments online card rates used here. Shopify's promotional trial pricing is not modelled.

Frequently asked questions
How does this calculator compare Etsy and Shopify fees?
It uses the same fee engine as the rest of the site for the Etsy side — the $0.20 listing fee, the 6.5% transaction fee, your country's payment processing fee, and any regulatory operating fee — and the official Shopify plan and card rates for the Shopify side. Both sides are computed on the same order: item price plus the shipping you charge.
What Shopify fees are included?
Shopify's subscription (Basic $29/month billed annually, or Grow $79/month) plus the online Shopify Payments card rate — 2.9% plus $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% plus $0.30 on Grow — charged on the full order total including shipping. These were checked against Shopify's pricing in October 2026; third-party payment gateways, PayPal and point-of-sale rates differ and are not modelled.
Where do the two plans break even?
With a $30 item plus $5 shipping in the US and no Offsite Ads attribution, Etsy takes about $3.78 per order while Shopify takes about $1.32 plus the $29 monthly fee. The crossover is about 12 orders per month: at 11 orders Etsy costs $41.53 versus $43.47 on Shopify; at 12 orders Etsy costs $45.30 versus $44.78. Drag the orders slider to see it live.
How do Offsite Ads change the break-even?
An Offsite-Ads-attributed order adds 15% of the order total (12% for shops over $10,000 in annual sales). On the $35 example that is $5.25 per attributed order, which pulls the break-even down from about 12 to roughly 4 orders per month if every Etsy order came from Offsite Ads. Use the attribution slider to model your real share.
Why might cheap items never break even on Shopify?
Fixed cents hurt low baskets: a $4.99 digital order costs about $0.92 in Etsy fees but about $0.44 on Shopify — a gap of well under a dollar, so Basic's $29 needs about 61 such orders per month to pay off. Conversely the Grow plan only makes sense at volume: for the $35 basket its break-even is about 32 orders per month.
